Under the Sea

Who doesn’t love a day at the spa?  Man or woman, I think we all love the feeling of being pampered, and a lot of the soothing experience often comes from the decor of the spa itself.  You can easily bring the relaxing colours and finishes of the spa into your home, whether it be a bathroom, or even a bedroom, anywhere really that you would want to feel comfortable and relaxed.

Greens and blues are a couple of the main colours I think of when I think spa, however, more on the grayed down side, no kelly greens or vibrant blues.   Think of muted tones of the sea, blues and greens splashed with waves of white to calm.   Blues and greens are normally found on the cooler side of the colour wheel, which tend to psychologically cool the brain in a space that is normally thought of as warm, think steam baths and hot oil massages, so it’s no wonder these colours are usually found in spas in one form or another.

Colour doesn’t always have to come in the form of paint, add colour to your hard surfaces and leave the paint colours more neutral.  Natural lighting from this skylight adds warmth to the cooler tones of the green wall tiles.

In the same breath, sandy colours as well as soft taupes can also make the perfect spa like colour, something neutral, yet light and airy, allowing almost any accent colour to work.  Again, taking inspiration from the sea, this time a coral reef, the same colours reflect the design of a spa.

Sandy wall colour paired with organic gray tiles and warm woods give a clean and fresh feel to this contemporary bathroom.

Do you have a space in your home that calms you down and is spa like?  I’d love to hear about it or see some pictures!
